Voices of Ashkenazic Women: Traditional and Composed Songs
Deborah Berman
Sunday at 4 pm, November 1 in the Social Hall
Our guest will share the life and work of Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman and her mother. Beyle was both a traditional Yiddish singer and composer and the daughter of Lifshe Schaechter Widman, one of the most renowned traditional singers. The program discusses the Yiddish singing tradition among Eastern European women before the war, where Beyle learned to sing from her mother, Lifshe, and others. We will listen to field recordings and sing some examples from the tradition, as well as teach some of the songs we sing.
