Race in Israel: Mizrahim, Black Panthers, and the Struggle for Civil Rights

Dimona Twist

Temple Beth-El of Ithaca, Adult Education presents:
Professor Deborah Starr, Director of the Jewish Studies Program at Cornell will be hosting a three part program beginning on Wednesday, October 14th at 7 PM.

Race in Israel: Mizrahim, Black Panthers, and the Struggle for Civil Rights

Description: In the early 1950s, hundreds of thousands of Jews arrived in Israel from Arab- and Islamic-majority countries. This class will explore the experiences of Mizrahi immigrants, their treatment by the Ashkenazi-dominated Israeli authorities, and their struggle for civil rights. Each session, we will watch and discuss a documentary film.

10/14  Film: Dimona Twist (Michal Aviad, 2016), 71 min
Topic: This film follows five women who immigrated to Israel in the 1950s and were settled in the desert town of Dimona. We will discuss how the film represents the history of Israeli development from the periphery—from a nation starting up, to the technological seeds of Israel as “start-up nation.”
